 Abstract

A multidisciplinary approach to dental treatment is highly desirable and can significantly improve treatment outcomes and the long-term prognosis of complex cases. Therefore, orthodontic therapy can no longer be isolated from the increasing treatment demands of other specialties. In patients requiring orthognathic surgery, the orthodontist uses various diagnostic methods, such as radiographs, study models, and photographs, to determine whether there is excess or deficiency of either jaw base and in which plane (sagittal, vertical, or transverse) the discrepancy exists. Together with the oral surgeon, the orthodontist decides on the degree of correction to be performed during orthognathic procedures and determines the treatment sequence.
